For the 11th anniversary of BookOfTheDead.ws in October 2020, I offered ten people the chance to buy a copy of my Evil Dead Database. I may make more of these in the future, but for the moment, this project is being archived here.

Since 2003, a few years before I started EvilDeadChainsaws.com & BookOfTheDead.ws, I've been saving a wide range of Evil Dead related material, alongside many other fans who have contributed even older material to this database over the years. Things like saved websites/pages/forums/threads, PDFs, Photos, Artwork, Magazine/Newspaper Scans, Scripts, Fonts, Music & Audio Files, Videos, Text Files, etc... So much really great material is just lost; websites that go down, forums wiped, videos offline, which is such a shame. This is especially true with the rise of Facebook. In years past, people of all abilities could create their own individual fansites & pages which would be around for years. Facebook groups have largely replaced these, and can appear and disappear overnight on the whim of Facebook. So much content posted to Facebook is ultimately disposable, with each new post bumping the last further and further down the page, to the point that they're all but deleted. For exactly this reason, it's a good idea for this Database to be shared around.

The earliest versions of the database were released on The Evil Dead - The Treasures Collection 2008 Fanmade DVD. As the project was updated & added to, it became too big for that set. Rather than remove some of the less important/rare items, and continue trying to fit everything onto that one disc, the Database releases' then became stand-alone data DVD-R discs, then multiple Blu-Ray discs, and now exists as a folder shared on portable hard drives. As of 29/11/20, the database is 123.25GB in size consisting of 141,274 files in 6199 folders, with files dating from November 1992 to November 2020.

I had started thinking about how I might share the database as a package back in March 2020, and I had real trouble coming up with an overall packaging design I was really happy with. Various ideas included a Book of the Dead, Kandarian Dagger handle or section, Evil Dead mini clock, Evil Dead time capsule, even a Fake severed body part, but I settled on an aged wooden shipping crate addressed to Professor Knowby. The final package offered included;

A mini handmade custom vintage style wooden crate (5" x 7" x 3"), with an aged address label
Inside that you have an aged letter, with aged cotton cloth padding
Finally, a 240GB SSD drive (NTFS format), in an aged SSK aluminum USB-C 3.1 enclosure, with cable

The drive also included all the downloadable files, website & forum backups available though BookOftheDead.ws, along with folders covering nearly sixty of my own personal projects, EvilDeadChainsaws.com, Within The Woods & Super-8 Shorts material, along a vast amount of saved material from many other people, the biggest of which being Morsoths's 3.8GB Evil Dead Database DVD.

Further to this, each one came with the additional offer that the SSD Drive could be returned to me periodically, and updated (a maximum of once a year). The drive was around half full upon buying, so there was still plenty of space to add new material. The price for this package was £100 + S&H.

I posted the project in a news update on BookOfTheDead.ws on October 1st, but didn't re-post it on Facebook as I normally would, as I wanted to reserve it for people who actually checked the site, rather than sell everything on Facebook. Ten sets were on offer, but by October 31st, only six had been bought, so that is what I made. The creation of the final six boxes for customers took around three weeks, completing on November 29th, 2020.

If you have any rare material that isn't already part of this Database, or higher quality versions of any existing items you'd like to contribute to and share with other evil dead fans, I'd really like to hear from you. This might be something you saved from the internet years ago and haven't seen since (eBay auction photos are a good example as they are only around for around 90 days and then they're gone forever), some rare collectable you have that no one else does, and you wouldn't mind taking some photos/scans, or saved offline mirrors of old sites or forums. So get in contact, whatever you have.
