TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS --------------------------- THQ thoroughly tests its games on a variety of systems before they are released, but it is virtually impossible to test on all combinations of software and hardware. Many of the issues you may encounter are caused by device drivers for video cards, sound cards and CD-ROM drives that are not fully compatible with the Windows operating system and/or DirectX. The following troubleshooting tips are intended to assist you in solving some of the common issues you might experience in relation to the game. -------DIRECTX 8------- During the "Evil Dead: Hail to the King" installation process, the program will determine if Microsoft DirectX 8 needs to be installed on your computer. If so, the Microsoft DirectX 8 setup program will install the appropriate files on your computer. After installation of DirectX 8, you may be prompted to restart your machine for the new drivers to take effect. If you choose not to install DirectX 8, and you find that later you need to install DirectX 8, follow these directions: 1. Insert "Evil Dead: Hail to the King" Disc 1 (Install CD) in your CD-ROM drive. 2. Wait a few moments until the Evil Dead splash screen appears. 3. Click on the Install DirectX 8 button. This will launch the Microsoft DirectX 8 setup program. Follow the on-screen instructions. If you have AutoPlay disabled, you can manually launch the Microsoft DirectX 8 setup program by doing the following: 1. Insert "Evil Dead: Hail to the King" Disc 1 (Install CD) in your CD-ROM drive. 2. Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-click on the CD icon in the My Computer window. 3. After the Evil Dead window is open, double-click on the DirectX8 folder. 4. Double-click on SETUP.EXE and follow the on-screen instructions. For those of you unfamiliar with DirectX, it is an API (Application Programming Interface) set that increases the functionality and speed at which games play under the Windows operating system. These API's allow direct access to the enhanced features of hardware under Windows. With DirectX, a program has instant access to the hardware, allowing for great advances in graphics, sound, video, 3D and network capabilities of games. If you have other Windows games on your computer, chances are you already have an earlier version of DirectX installed on your computer. In this case, the Microsoft DirectX 8 setup program will update your files. This should not affect any games using previous versions of DirectX. Should you encounter problems with DirectX, go to http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ for additional information. -------AUTOPLAY------- If the Evil Dead splash screen does not appear after inserting either "Evil Dead: Hail to the King" CD, try performing the following steps: 1. For example, mail programs and screen savers may interfere with the game while it is running. -------SOUND------- If you are experiencing sound problems, please check the following: 1. Make sure you have a sound card that is 100% Sound Blaster compatible. 2. Make sure you have properly installed the latest drivers for your sound card. In most cases, these may be obtained by downloading them from the sound card manufacturer's website. Many sound problems can be resolved by installing the latest drivers. Also make sure the volume is set at an audible level. 5. Make sure you have closed all other programs on your computer when playing the game. For example, audio or music players (mp3, wav, etc.) may interfere with playing the game while it is running. -------INPUT DEVICES------- This game does not support joysticks, but does support the Gravis and Microsoft gamepad controllers. The following are known issues in relation to these gamepad controllers: 1. When using either a serial Gravis gamepad or Microsoft Sidewinder Pro gamepad, all gameplay keys will stop functioning. However, you will be able to perform all game related functions using the gamepad. Additionally, removing the gamepad while the game is running will NOT reactivate the keyboard. You will have to exit out of the game and restart with the gamepad removed to resume keyboard control. Keyboard control WILL remain active if you use a USB Gravis controller. 2. Gamepad controller configurations cannot be changed in-game. You will need to use the controller configuration applications that came with your gamepad in order to remap gamepad controls. 3. This game does not support the Microsoft Plug and Play gamepad because it does not have enough buttons to fully accommodate the controls. 4. In some instances, the USB versions of the Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad do not work when used with the game. -------------------- X.
