Game Description
Based around the trilogy the game picks up eight years after Army of Darkness. Ash returns to the cabin again to battle a horrding force of Deadites that have crossed into this world thanks to the 'Necronomicon' or 'Book of the Dead'. The game will feature all the trimmings that made the trilogy so appealing such as chainsaws, zombie-slaying, aswell as the trilogy figure head Bruce Campbell who has agreed to voice-over duties. It will also feature 2D backgrounds and "true to the movie" camera angles and effects. The colour will be in 24-bit format, a first for any PlayStation title, and Heavy Iron Studios are confident that they can develop a game that avoids all the tricky load times that slowed down the scene changes in previous PSX titles such as 'Resident Evil 2', by using high ratio compression schemes and skilled PlayStation programmers.
Here's the description from videogames.com written by Laura Fielder
"Sam
Raimi's The Evil Dead first appeared on the horror-film scene in
1982, making movie-goers believe they'd never again step into the
woods, nearly 18 years before The Blair Witch Project made people
say the very same thing. The sequel, aptly named Evil Dead II,
appeared in 1987, and then the third installment in the trilogy,
Army of Darkness, was released in 1993, carrying on essentially
the same Bruce Campbell-dressed blood-splattering goreific theme
through a slew of new, unfortunate living-dead situations.
The storyline for THQ's new PlayStation game, Evil Dead: Ashes 2
Ashes, takes place about eight years after Army of Darkness. The
game is being designed as a single-player adventure that puts you
in the role of the series' star, Ashley J. "Ash"
Williams, played by Bruce Campbell in the films. The game's story
uses the continuing finding-of-the-Book-of-the-Dead (aka
Necronomicon) theme to push the gameplay forward. In the game,
you go back to the original cabin in the woods and relive the
terror of the Ash character as the undead pop through the
floorboards and broken windows. Whether you relive it by running
from or attacking the undead as they poke through those very same
floorboards and windows is something we have yet to determine.
THQ says the game will include puzzle solving and real-time
action-adventure in your encounters with enemies. You'll have
weapons, too. Surely there'll be a chainsaw involved, but in any
case, what you have at your disposal will be upgradeable.
The game won't be just a rehash of the movie's environments and
themes, even though Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell
(the film's creators) are supportive of the game's development.
Developers at Heavy Iron Studio are adding new territories and
scenarios to the cabin-in-the-woods and terror-everywhere themes.
In line with the scripts, however, the enemy characters will be
of the deadite class, as well as other as-of-yet-unmentioned
creatures from the films. Bruce Campbell will also furnish the
Ash character's voice, which could end up sounding a bit like
Duke Nukem's, when the day's done.
As you'd hope from an Evil Dead game, the stages will progress
with fmv cutscenes and prerendered scenarios, between and during
level play. The camera work is promised to be decidedly
horror-film-like, using the angles and setups of the classics to
give an eye to the gameplay"
Here's the official THQ website description:
"THQ subsidiary Heavy Iron Studios, a development group comprised primarily of members of the acclaimed Parasite Eve™ team, will bring gaming and horror fans their first interactive foray into Renaissance Pictures' dark Evil Dead universe with Evil Dead for PlayStation, Dreamcast and PC. THQ's Evil Dead will meld original creative content with a high-powered brand resulting in a bone-chilling Evil Dead experience that plays off the characters and environments of the cult-classic film.
