THE EVIL DEAD

It is no secret that the UK remains one of the most censored countries in the European Union or in Western civilisation. 'The Evil Dead' as a cinematic movie was one of a wave of new horror that took visuals to the extreme and subsequently it's frank depiction of violence was edited for both cinema and video release. Tthe UK video release of the movie runs at 79 minutes and 47 seconds, some 6 minutes and 13 seconds behind Sam Raimi's original 86 minute version.

18 cuts were made to the UK cinema and video version in 1982

2 cuts: Linda's ankle being pierced by a pencil
4 cuts: Scott hacking Shelley into pieces with an axe
8 cuts: Ash attempts to kill the possessed Linda. This included excessive scenes of Linda vomiting
1 cut: Ash repeatedly hitting Cheryl's hand with a rifle
1 cut: Ash poking out Scott's eyes
1 cut: Blood gushing from Scott's chest after a stake is extracted
1 cut: Cheryl hitting Ash on the Head with a poker

The Evil Dead has since been released uncut in the UK on DVD - release Autumn 2001.

The version available in the UK today has been subjected to a further 23 cuts.

4 cuts: Cheryl's rape sequence
8 cuts: Scott and Ash's fight with the possessed Shelley
6 cuts: Ash's fight with Linda
5 cuts: Ash's fight with Scott

A total of 41 cuts have been made to the legal version of the film.

Australia: UNCUT 'R' rating
Finland: Banned
France: 12
Germany: Two versions exist, one is banned outright and is therefore uncut. The other is heavily cut by some 48 seconds and has been given an '18' certificate.
USA: R
UK: 18
Sweden: Originally banned the film was re-released in 1997 completely UNCUT.
