    Plot Summary:

A sequel / remake of the film The Evil Dead. A young man named Ash takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin, and plays back a professor's tape recorded recitation of passages from the Book of the Dead. The spell calls up an evil force from the woods which turns Linda into a monstrous Deadite, and threatens to do the same to Ash. When the professor's daughter and her entourage show up at the cabin, the night turns into a non-stop, grotesquely comic battle with chainsaw and shotgun on one side, demon horde and flying eyeball on the other.

    Trivia:

    • One of the books on the can that traps Ash's possessed hand is "A Farewell to Arms."

    • A glove belonging to A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET's Freddy Krueger can be seen hanging near the steps in one of the cellar scenes. This was in response to the use of THE EVIL DEAD on a television screen in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

    • Professor Knowby's dead wife is said to be in the "fruit cellar," a reference to PSYCHO.

    • Ash's chainsaw appears to switch hands in one scene. This is because Sam Raimi decided Ash should walk the opposite way across the room in that scene, so he flipped the negative.

    • Often considered to be a remake of the first Evil Dead, however this is not accurate. The rights to show scenes from the original could not be obtained to re-cap what happened, so they recreated the beginning to explain how Ash got to the cabin, a headless Linda, etc.

    Quotes:

    • Annie: The first passage will allow the demon to manifest itself in the flesh.
Ash: Why the hell would we want to do that?

    • Ash: You're goin' down. Chainsaw.

    • Ash: [talking to mirror] I'm fine... I'm fine...
[Mirror Ash jumps out of the mirror and grabs Ash.]
Mirror Ash: I don't think so. We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound "fine"?

    • [Upon gaining the chain saw in place of his lost right hand]
      Ash: Groovy.

    • Demon: I'll swallow your soul!! I'll swallow your soul!!
[Ash points his shotgun at the Demon's head]
      Ash: Swallow this!

    • Henrietta: Someone's in my fruit cellar! Someone with a fresh soooul!

    • [Ash's Hand gains a life of it's own]
Ash: Gimme back my hand..GIMME BACK MY HAND!

    • Ash: That's right... who's laughing now... who's laughing *now*?

    • Ash: Then let's head on down into that cellar and carve ourselves a witch.

    Alternate Versions:

    • The UK video version has been cut by four seconds, to remove a kick to the head.

    • The Elite Entertainment laserdisc has a 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurette that shows the filming of footage that never made it into the final U.S. cut, such as:
      1. A scene where Henrietta gets possessed as Professor Knowby recites the incantations.
      2. A gorier version (this time using body parts) of the scene where Ash chops up Evil Ed with an axe.

    • Aside from several quieter moments (including a demonic Henrietta rocking in her favorite chair), the complete version's also got Linda's severed head throwing up all over Ash when he traps it in the vise, a possessed Ash eating an innocent little squirrel, and the incredibly gruesome dismemberment of Ed after he becomes a demon. Hey, and you remember when Ash was getting pounded by all those streams of blood? Well, they originally changed not only to black, but also yellow, green, and orange

    • The BBFC passed an uncut version of Evil Dead 2 for video and DVD release in October 2001.

    • The Anchor Bay releases are complete and uncut.

    Film Gaffs:

    • CONT: Annie's clothes change in the middle of the film for no apparent reason.

    • CONT: Ash chops his hand off at the wrist, yet later it is seen to have a fair amount of forearm attached to it.

    • CONT: The green slime on the wall and on the others disappears.

    • CONT: The hand that Ash attaches the chainsaw to (the negative was reversed for one shot).

    • CONT: When Annie is trying to pull Jake out of the cellar door, she is sprayed with blood and her shirt and shorts soaked in the front. When she turns around, she's almost completely clean.

    • CONT: When Ash goes into the basement to get the pages of the Necronomicon he picks up one page with the hand where his chainsaw should be.

    • CONT: While Ash is fighting with his hand in the kitchen, you can see daylight through the windows above the sink. However, this scene supposedly takes place at night.

    • CREW: After Ash comes out of the water, you can see a person behind him dressed in black running in the woods.

    • CREW: Set lighting can be seen on top of the corners of the porch awning in several exterior shots of the cabin.

    • CREW: The harness, rope and pulley that drag the character into the vortex at the end are all clearly visible.

    • CREW: The lighting rig is often clearly visible above the cabin interior set.

    • CREW: The wires holding the flying eyeball and the wires that move the roots of the tree are visible.

    • CREW: When Ash and Annie are hugging just before the kitchen shelves fall, a crew member can clearly be seen in the background to the left of Annie. He moves a couple of times, trying to stay out of shot.

    • CREW: When someone's head rolls toward the camera after it has been chopped off, you can see the crew member who threw the head toward the camera in the background as he tries to hide from the camera behind a log

    • CREW: You can, in several outdoor nighttime scenes, clearly see the lighting equipment (used to create the eerie glows in the woods) hanging from trees.

    • FAKE: Various of the weapons used, including the chainsaw, the poker, and a knife, bend and wobble as though made of rubber or plastic.

    • FAKE: When Ash crashes through the front windshield of his Olds, a wire can be seen attached to his body.

    • FAKE: When the "spirit" chases Ash through the house, you can see the rigging of the set where the roof should be.

    • FAKE: When the possessed Henrietta is spinning over Annie, there is a large tear in the crotch of the "Henrietta" suit.

    • SYNC: When Ash's possessed hand is smashing plates on his head and punching him, his mouth isn't moving at all, yet he's groaning.
