Sideshow Toy Ash Review

Written by Patrick Soucy

The Sculpting: The face of Bruce Campbell seems to defy even the best toy sculptors. The new doll doesn't escape this curse; that just ain't Bruce! In the prototype pictures the face looks pretty good, but the production figure doesn't hold up. In fact, this face looks almost like a zombie face (that, or Ash has pink-eye). His contracted face make it looks like he's in terrible pain (or is severely constipated).

The face is still better than the 18" Ash by McFarlane Toys. And the sculpt on the new S-Mart clerk Ash looks even better.

The Articulation: The articulation is good. You can positioned Ash pretty much any way you want. The only small problem, I fear, is that the articulation is fragile. This is not a toy for the kids.

The Paint: Painting is perfect, with the exception of the eyes. The paint on the accessories are great too. The chainsaw hand pops onto the wrist fairly easily, and looks just like you'd expect. There are plenty of bloodstains for the hardcore fan. The chainsaw is particularly well done, dirtied and shadowed like the chainsaw in the movie.

The Outfit: Clothing is the principal attraction with dolls. It is the same for this one. Ash wears the blue-tunic-and-cape outfit from the film, and the clothes seem very faithful. They can be removed, but it's not easy to replace them. There is a one small error: the color of the cape. It should be grey bluish. My doll has a green cape, but I've seen pictures online of figures with blue capes.

The Accessories: All the accessories are perfect. The chainsaw is most beautiful rendition I have seen on an Ash figure to date. The shotgun is a great too, complete with an open-and-close shell chamber. There's also a holster for the shotgun which fits on Ash's back. The gauntlet is pretty good, and can replace the chainsaw on Ash's wrist. Ash's watch can be removed. There are also straps and a stock for the Remington.

Overall: Ash is limited to 10,000 pieces, which is a comparatively small run. Serious collectors and fans of the Evil Dead movies should be jumping all over Ash; he's definitely worth the money.
