Quality:
 MPEG-2 / 720x480 / NTSC 4:3

 AC3 - 2ch / 48kHz / 192k

'The Incredibly Strange Film Show' was a programme profiling offbeat directors hosted by Jonathan Ross, which ran for two series over 1988 to 1989 on UK TV Channel 4. Episode 6 of Series 1 featured the renaissance team and others, and covered from their early Super-8 days right up to to Spiegel's 'Night Crew'. Anchor Bay included this on the bonus disc of their 2003 UK R2 Evil Dead Trilogy Box-set, but likely at Sam's request, all the Super-8 short clips, along with the footage from 'Crimewave' was omitted, while some of the missing sections were replaced with alternate material (38m 38s as broadcast, edited down to 34m 09s for DVD). This is a composite of the uncut bootleg lower quality VHS obtained from Stumpy Discs bootleg website in 2007, and the higher quality edited retail DVD version to give the full uncut show, while all in the highest possible quality.

 AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / 256k

This is a 6 minute segment of a local Detroit TV show aired circa 1983, in which Tom Sullivan is interviewed, and shows some of his props. This was personally transferred to DVD in 2009, from one of a pair of incedibly rare NTSC VHS tapes borrowed from an american forum user. These tapes also contained a number of other previously unavailable Super-8 shorts, additional material, footage & interviews, and are an entirely separate compilation from the various generations of the standard Sam Raimi Super-8 Shorts VHS tape/DVD. While the ultimate source/leak of these tapes is known, I have chosen not to disclose it here as it's not general knowledge.

This is an untouched raw VHS to DVD transfer of the Evil Dead II - 'Severely Edited For Television' TV Version as recorded on Mexican TV during the 1990's. The TV version runs at 1h 30m 39s, and the standard Theatrical version runs at 1h 24m 18s. Between various footage removed and alternate footage added in, there is 16m 10s of new material here. Among other footage; there's more of Ash & Linda embracing & dancing, Ash burning the book, Ash driving to the bridge, eating cereal & choking, Ash dreaming, and flipping out in the workshed having killed Linda, possessed Ash in the forest eating a squirrel, more shots of Ash in the cellar, and more images flash as Ash travels back in time. The film plays in dubbed Spanish, without subtitles, and there are periodic advert breaks. The quality is fairly good, although it reduces somewhat and the frame becomes a little jumpy towards the end of the film. This was the TV version source footage used in the Book Of The Dead II DVD.

Sam Raimi's Super-8 Shorts DVD
(2009)

This release takes the best quality versions of all the Super-8 shorts available as of 2009, assembling them on to a properly authored DVD box-set, with menus, disc art, and a DVD cover. In order to keep any re-encoding or converting of the source MPEGs to an absolute minimum (most of them were direct copies of the source files), discs 1 & 2 are in NTSC format, and disc 3 is in PAL format. Here is the contents list of the three discs in the set;

Disc 1 (Dual Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • Within The Woods
  • The Sappy Sap
  • Six Months To Live
  • Stryker's War
Disc 2 (Single Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • Shemp Eats the Moon
  • William Shakespeare - The Movie
Disc 3 (Dual Layer Disc - PAL)
  • Attack Of The Helping Hand!
  • Clockwork
  • Oedipus Rex
  • The Blind Waiter
  • Torro, Torro, Torro!
  • It's Murder!
Please note that since this set was assembled, a number of the titles have been upgraded, so are no longer the best quality available. You can read a lot more about this whole project on this web page.

Josh Becker's Super 8 Shorts DVD
(2010)

When Josh Becker made a number of Super-8 shorts available direct to the public through his own website in March 2010, I placed an order, and offered my services in re-designing artwork for the releases. This offer was not taken up, But I thought I would just go ahead and re-author the shorts onto three single layer DVD discs anyway, along with creating matching disc art, cover & menus, which allowed me to store the original discs safely away. I also took the chance to fix some issues related to order, authoring and production of the original DVDs themselves. All of this was achieved without re-encoding the shorts themselves, keeping the quality identical. Here are the disc contents;

Disc 1 - 1972 to 1976 (Single Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • Public Enemy Revisited
  • Oedipus Rex
  • Super Student
  • The Case of the Topanga Pearl
Disc 2 - 1977 to 1978 (Single Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • The Final Round
  • Acting And Reacting
  • Holding It
Disc 2 - 1979 to 1982 (Single Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • The Blind Waiter
  • Stryker's War
  • Cleveland Smith Bounty Hunter
You can read a lot more about this whole project, including detailed background information on how the project was created, on this web page.

Book Of The Dead - Preservation Edit
(2011)

This was to be a follow up project to the Evil Dead - The Treasures Collection DVD. The idea was to drop the Japanese 1985 'Herald Videogram' laserdisc transfer, and replace it with a theatrical preservation of the Book Of The Dead titled version, using the Anchor Bay 2010 US Blu-Ray transfer, restoring 'The Evil Dead' to 'Book Of The Dead'; the version screened at the 1981 world premiere, while also expanding to a 2-disc set and upgrading previous features, to create the definitive fanmade DVD. Here is the DVD contents;

Disc 1 (Dual Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • Book Of The Dead Theatrical Restoration
         (Original un-mixed mono audio track)
         (Complete Isolated score audio track)
         (2010 AB Blu-Ray Commentary)
(1999 Elite Bruce Campbell DVD Commentary)
(1999 Elite Sam Raimi & Rob Tapert DVD Commentary)
         (Facts & trivia subtitle track)
(English subtitles for the hard of hearing)

  • Within The Woods
         (Complete Isolated score audio track)
(English subtitles for the hard of hearing)

  • Book Of The Dead Trailer
  • The Evil Dead - Deleted scenes (edited & mixed from various raw footage)
Disc 2 (Dual Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • A censored compilation sequence of the BBFC 1990 UK VHS version
  • The Incredibly Strange Film Show (Composite DVD & VHS version)
  • PM Magazine Detroit TV Spot on Renaissance pictures (Full 7m 28s segment)
  • 1982 Tom Sullivan TV interview
  • Super-8 Shorts; It's Murder & Clockwork
  • A PC Viewable DVD-ROM folder (an edited version of the full folder)
  • Release notes & information pages

The Evil Dead - Book Of The Dead Titled Version
(2011)

The original Book Of The Dead titled version was never generally released theatrically or on home video, but there were a couple of rare exceptions. As far as is known, there were four releases; two Greek and two Mexican, both in English on VHS. The movie itself plays shot for shot identically to the general theatrical version, but with four minor differences; the movie title, and alternate sunrise shot at the end just before Ash walks out of the cabin, Ash's scream resonates for a few seconds with a black screen before the end credits roll, and the text on the last page of the end credits.

This is a full VHS to PAL DVD transfer of the 1985 'Video Standard' label PAL Greek VHS tape, including the opening Video Standard ident and copyright screen, although this transfer does have Greek subtitles. The disc also contains a DVD-ROM folder with 600dpi scans of both the VHS cover and tape label.

The Evil Dead - The Extended German 96 minute 'XXL Version'
(2008)

This is a German unofficial semi-bootleg extended DVD of The Evil Dead called the 'XXL Version', running at 1:36:04 (PAL) probably released around 2008, which has around 15 minutes of additional footage in comparison to the theatrical version running at 1:25:13 (1:21:31 PAL equivalent). It's worth saying first that there is no new 'previously unseen' material here. The extra footage edited in to the standard version is drawn from both the 20 minute 'Behind The Scenes Footage & Outtakes' featurette on the 1999 US Elite Entertainment Special Edition DVD, and the 'Treasures From The Cutting Room Floor' featurette from the 2007 Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition US DVD. The movie is presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen with German dubbed audio, but the original English audio is also included as a second track.

Had the creators spent more time seamlessly blending the the video & audio of their source footage into the main movie, along with giving a little more thought to the edits themselves, this could have been a really worthwhile project. While this 'Extended' version is very unlikely to have been officially sanctioned by Renaissance Pictures, it can still be bought as a retail DVD in Germany, either as a standalone release, or as part of the huge German 12-disc Evil Dead Trilogy DVD set.

Evil Dead - The Treasures Collection DVD
(2008)

This fanmade DVD draws together some of the rarest elements in this list on to a properly authored DVD; with menus, release notes and a DVD cover. This release also contains the Evil Dead DVD-ROM folder v1.2

Disc 1 (Dual Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • The Evil Dead - The Japanese 1985 'Herald Videogram' laserdisc version expertly transferred to DVD.
  • A superior quality copy of the short film 'Within The Woods'.
  • 'Book Of The Dead' to 'The Evil Dead' - The version differences.
  • A 'Book Of The Dead' workprint trailer.
  • A PC Viewable DVD-ROM folder
The DVD is a dual layer release at just under 8GB in size, as quality wise its really too much to squeeze onto one single layer. You can read a lot more about this whole project, including background information and a highly detailed list of all the changes made, at this web page.

Book Of The Dead - Raw Footage DVD
(2014)

This is an untouched raw VHS to DVD transfer of 3h 49m 17s of The Evil Dead raw film footage, taken from a set of ten NTSC VHS tapes, probably created in the late 1990's. Only four sets of these tapes are thought to exist; one owned by Sam Raimi, the second formerly by Elite Entertainment, the owner of the third is unknown, and the fourth is owned by a French fan & friend of the site. It was from these tapes (tape 2 mostly) that the twenty-minute 'Behind The Scenes Footage & Outtakes' featurette on the 1999 US R1 Elite Entertainment Special Edition DVD was assembled. This is entirely different to the The Evil Dead: Treasures From The Cutting Room Floor raw footage featurette on the 2007 US R1 Anchor Bay Entertainment 3-disc Ultimate Edition DVD. Of the set of ten, tapes one and four are identical duplicates.

Primarily the footage consists of alternate and longer takes of shots used in the finished film, and while much of the footage is silent, there are a few interesting new and longer scenes in there too. Each tape ranges from 15-27mins, probably containing the contents of one or two 16/35mm film reels each; accounting for the short length. While much of the shooting was indeed done without sound, there are some shots where the clapper board is visible with a sound number, so sound would have been recorded at the time but it's just missing on the tapes. This set was never meant for the public to see in its entirety, so it probably never mattered to anyone involved. It was just created for Elite to assemble the raw footage featurette.

Artwork was personally created for this VHS to DVD transfer. While there were ten source VHS tapes, their short running length meant that all the footage could fit across just two dual layer DVDs. This DVD set is not being publicly shared, but may be available for trade if you have something equally special available in return.

The Evil Dead - UK Palace Pictures 1982 Pre-Cert Version
(2012)

This is a VHS to DVD transfer of the UK Palace Pictures 1982 pre-cert VHS tape. The cuts made to The Evil Dead for an 'X' cinema certificate in 1982, were identical to the 1982 video version, with 49 seconds removed. This trimmed the pencil screwing around in Linda's ankle, Shelley chewing off her hand and subsiquent dismemberment, and various other edits here and there. This DVD contains the full VHS tape including the copyright screen, the Palace Pictures Ident, Basket Case, Female Trouble & Eraserhead trailers, and the censored film itself. This transfer has no benefits whatsoever, beyond preserving the censored version of the film, and a nostalgia factor for those who owned the original VHS tape. The disc also contains a DVD-ROM folder with 600dpi scans of both the VHS cover and tape label.

The Evil Dead - UK Palace Pictures 1990 BBFC Cut/Certified Version
(2011)

This is a VHS to DVD transfer of the UK Palace Pictures 1990 VHS. This re-release of The Evil Dead was censored by the BBFC removing 115 seconds of objectionable material. This DVD contains the full VHS tape including the copyright screen, the Palace Pictures Ident, Evil Dead 2 trailer, and the censored film itself. This transfer has no benefits whatsoever, beyond preserving the censored version of the film, and a nostalgia factor for those who owned the original VHS tape. The disc also contains a DVD-ROM folder with 600dpi scans of both the VHS cover and tape label.

Evil Dead II - UK Palace Pictures 1987 BBFC Cut/Certified Version
(2012)

This is a VHS to DVD transfer of the UK Palace Pictures 1987 VHS. Evil Dead II was passed by the BBFC on May 22nd of 1987 for release on home video, with 2 seconds of cuts; to two sequences where Ash was kicked in the face by Jake. This DVD contains the full VHS tape including the copyright screen, the Palace Pictures Ident, Trick Or Treat trailer, and the censored film itself. This transfer has no benefits whatsoever, beyond preserving the censored version of the film, and a nostalgia factor for those who owned the original VHS tape. The disc also contains a DVD-ROM folder with 600dpi scans of both the VHS cover and tape label.

Evil Dead II DVD Companion
(2008)

This release takes some of the above single MPEG files add menus, and authour them onto two single layer DVDs, with a DVD disc art and a cover, creating a companion set to the retail versions of Evil Dead II. Here are the disc contents;

Disc 1 (Single Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • Evil Dead II Vern Hyde's BTS Camcorder Footage
  • Evil Dead II Workprint
Disc 2 (Single Layer Disc / NTSC)
  • Evil Dead II - Behind The Screams
  • Evil Dead II - Palace UK TV Spots
  • The Directors 1987 Interiview
  • In Review - Sam Raimi 1986 TV Interview
  • This Is Horror - Sam Raimi Interview
You can read a lot more about this whole project over on the OriginalTrilogy.com fanedit forums, at this forum thread.

Evil Dead II Vern Hyde's Behind The Scenes Camcorder Footage
(2011)

Not to be confused with Greg's footage, this Evil Dead II behind the scenes camcorder raw footage seems to be taken from tapes shot by Vern Hyde and his effects crew, which leans towards more general on set footage, rather than special effects. The first disc running at 72m was originally copied from a Behind The Scenes Collection DVD obtained from The Asylum Of Oblivion bootleg website in 2008. The second disc is a 1:1 copy of a DVD bought from Ebay in 2011, and contains 65m 49s of the Evil Dead II talent show which took place as shooting wrapped, and on the same disc there is also 43m 20s of Darkman on-set footage, on which Vern and his crew also worked.

Evil Dead II - Japanese - Shochiku Home Video Laserdisc Transfer DVD
(2014)

This is a Laserdisc to DVD transfer of the 1987 Japanese Shochiku Home Video Laserdisc. Other than Japanese opening titles, and Japanese subtitles throughout, this version plays identically to the theatrical version. The main reason for preserving this verison, is that it's entirely 4:3 open-matte. While the 2000 R1 US Anchor Bay Evil Dead II DVD open-matte transfer also exists, there are a very small number of specific shots in which the open matte version framing appears as if the matted widescreen version has been zoomed in to 1:37:1, cropping the left & right sides to give a full frame image. This was transferred with the prospect of use in the Book Of The Dead II DVD, but the 2000 R1 US Anchor Bay Evil Dead II DVD open-matte transfer was used instead, due to the significant upgrade in picture quality. The disc also contains a DVD-ROM folder with 600dpi scans of both the VHS cover and tape label.

Evil Dead II - 'Severely Edited For Television' TV Version DVD
(2016)

Evil Dead II - Greg Nicotero's BTS Camcorder Footage DVD Box-set
(2016)

This is an untouched raw BetaCamSP to DVD transfer of Greg Nicotero's behind the scenes Camcorder Footage from Evil Dead II. Greg's camcorder captured much of the production, but only a small amount of this has ever been formerly released. The footage begins with the prep work in California, moulding the various cast members and prototyping many of the later make-up & effects, then runs through the main shoot & re-shoots, along with skits and hi-jinx shot by the make-up effects crew, and the wider crew. Highlights include Henrietta in her rocking chair becoming possessed, Linda's snake tongue, Ash's face reverting from deadite to normal, and Chop-top Ed, along with many unseen behind the scenes moments.

This footage was transferred from a set of six BetaCamSP tapes sold by president of Elite Entertainment Vini Bancalari. A French fan bought the set, and sent the set on to myself, in order for them to be transferred to DVD. Upon viewing, it becomes obvious why it would be impossible for any DVD producer to release anything but a carefully edited 'highlights' package. Over the running time, the amount of people seen on screen (from the cast & crew, to family members, visitors and passers-by) is huge. Identifying, tracking down and obtaining clearance for a DVD release from every one of them, would be impossible. Plus you have all the copyrighted workshop radio background music, off-the-cuff remarks, swearing, impressions, in-jokes and other assorted unsavoury material which some may not be keen on having out there all these years later.

Tape one ran at 1h 32m 15s, two 1h 24m 05s, three 1h 30m 06s, four 1h 33m 53s, five 1h 31m 33s and Tape six 1h 02m 33s, giving a total of 8h 35m 12s of footage. Tape one is entirely workshop & prep footage in California, as is the first 38m of tape two, and the first 25m of tape three. The remainder of the running time in tapes two, three, four, five & six is footage shot entirely in North Carolina. While on the whole, the majority of the footage seems to play in chronological order, some sections do chop and change, while other short sections are repeated, mainly the California prep footage on tape one. It's entirely possible that Greg shot the footage across a fair few tapes, and swapped between them during the shoot, so some of the footage plays out of sequence when each tape is watched start-to-finish, and while they were being dubbed from the camcorder onto VHS at the time, some little sections were accidentally repeated. Each 90min tape was transferred to it's own DVD, making a six-disc DVD set.

Even though this transfer was created solely for myself and the tape set's new French owner, artwork was personally created. While this DVD set is not being publicly shared, but may be available for trade if you have something equally special available in return.

Army Of Darkness - Primitive Screwhead Edition
(2008)

This fanmade DVD release features three differing extended versions of the movie, with both the alternate endings and alternate openings, available one one disc via seamless branching. It's a composite edit bringing together elements from each different version of the film along with re-inserting the various deleted scenes (which have been painstakingly cleaned up frame by frame) with new opening logos to provide the longest ever version of Army Of Darkness, in the highest possible quality. Its sources include the US R1 Universal HD-DVD US Theatrical Cut, the Hong Kong R3 MGM Director's Cut, the Australian R4 MGM International Cut, and the Sci-Fi channel TV version, all of which have some specific scenes & shots not found in the other versions.

It also includes a new 5.1 sound mix, including some musical surprises from the Army Of Darkness & Evil Dead II scores. You can read a lot more about this whole project over on the OriginalTrilogy.com fanedit forums, at this forum thread.

Army Of Darkness Taiwan Jei Wea Co LTD Laserdisc Transfer DVD
(2014)

This is a Laserdisc to DVD transfer of the 1993 Taiwan Jei Wea Co LTD Laserdisc. This laserdisc is a bootleg, which includes the Directors Cut of Army Of Darkness with the alternate ending in the future and the longer mini Ash sequence. At the time of it's creation, it was the first home version to include this different version. It also has Taiwanese subtitles throughout. The main reason for preserving this verison, is that it's entirely 4:3 open-matte, but there are other similar but better quality sources available so it's not hugely special in that respect.

The Evil Dead DVD-ROM Project
(2017)

This a pet project has been building up for some years. It's a huge collection of Evil Dead related material, both produced by myself, others, and saved from the internet; things like saved websites/pages/forums/threads, PDFs, Photos, Artwork, Magazine/Newspaper Scans, Scripts, Fonts, Music & Audio Files, Videos, Text Files, etc... material ranging from the 70's up to the very recent. You can read more about that here

The current version has 26,985 Files, 1,001 Folders at 37.1GB in size. Each new version contains everything from the last version, along with new additional/improved/replacement material. The first three versions were released on the 'Evil Dead - The Treasures Collection' fan made DVD. As new items were added, this project became too big for that disc, and became a standalone data DVD-R disc, then multiple discs, and recently multiple BD-R discs.
