- Evil Dead C64: 1982

I was really looking forward to playing this game. I heard all about ViS' involvement and, using their previous hit 'State Of Emergency' as a measure, I was eager to try it. Now it's here, in my living room tucked nicely in my PS2 in fact fresh from it's completion, so where do I start!

The coverartwork was nice and gave a glimpse into what the game was like: cartoony, definite distance from it's predessor 'Hail to the King'. I was impressed to see some Extar Features on the disc in an attempt to take advantage of the DVD technology. The 'Making Of' is short but sweet, Bruce is cool as ever offeringinsight into his involvement and teh future of Evil Dead (it's in video games for sure!). Also has nice gallery artwork from each level which you can access after completing each level, now onto the game.....

Gameplay: Good, easily controllable camera (always a bonus), easy controls but to be honest with you I thought there was a lot more story here for such a short game. Only running across six levels all of which are designed along the 'Find the Key/Stick/Wrench' road of gameplay and isn't very taxing but then neither was the game's price tag! The violence is bloody and in typical Evil Dead 2 tradition which I really really enjoyed. The enemies were varied and not too hard to dispatch, certainly nothing like 'Hail to the King', anf they kept coming so you didn't get too bored. Simple, easy, play it hard and you'll be done in less than a day.

Graphics: Neat interactive backgrounds and excellent artwork gives for a smooth ride. Bruce Campbell is nicely rendered although at times he struck me as looking a little too much a deranged maniac with a horses face. Game has a widescreen option aswell which is a nice addition.

Sound: Game has the ability to turn on surround sound which is cool, there's nothing better than hearing the howling wind or a distant cry for help over your shoulder. Bruce's voice over is great! Without him this game would be shit despite all THQ's efforts. His quips will keep you entertained from beginning to end: bliss. Chainsaw and shotguns blare out over the central and occasioanlly back speakers which is great. Good job here.

Overall: I'm gonna give two overall verdicts here, as a gamer this is very similar to the movies, it's entertainnig and a hoot, but the films have repeat viewing potential and this doesn't. After you've clocked it you'll probably pack it away for months or sell it on eBay questioning whether it was worth buying it at all but you can't argue withe the price tag though can you?.

Finishing comment: Loads of fun in the fashion of Evil Dead 2 (minus the horror of Hail to the King). Nice extra features on the disc but it's way too easy with no longevity whatsoever. For die-hard Evil Dead/gore hounds only.

Total Rating: * * * * * (5 out of 5 for Evil Dead fans)
Total Rating: * * * (3 out of 5 for those new to the franchise)
